Private sector luxury in public sector environment with Gerflor

The internal refurbishment of the Wyboston Harpers Health and Fitness Club has brought private sector quality to a public access environment and Gerflor’s Creation Wood floorcovering has been instrumental in the transformation.

Modern, innovative and warm are some of the words that have been used for the new club. The refurbishment was undertaken by Leisure Connections and is one of many similar projects that have benefited from Gerflor’s expertise in service and product range over the past twelve months. Kevin Yates, National Health and Fitness Manager at the company had a clear concept of what he wanted to achieve for the Wyboston branch and, together with Gerflor and contractors, the concept became reality.

“The theme idea was clear,” he comments. “We wanted to visually zone off certain areas to encourage members to talk to each other and interact. At the same time, we wanted the flooring to have a functional, directional purpose. Together we devised a design using Gerflor’s Creation Wood, based on S-shaped designs, with the S a darker shade to the rest of the flooring to act as a navigational aid for those using the equipment. By following the shape, members are guided to the next stage in their fitness regime. During training, most people look down so it made sense to use the floorcovering to this effect whilst still maintaining a highly attractive appearance.” 

The Creation Wood product offers a highly visual aesthetic appeal with the feeling of warmth through the wood effect. It has been used throughout the club in the reception, offices and main fitness area. The tonal differences in colour clearly and distinctly define the zones.

 “This was a complex floor pattern which required an extremely smooth surface finish,” continues Kevin Yates. “Gerflor’s Creation Wood proved to be extremely easy to manoeuvre and cut allowing us to create the exact shapes, curves and lines that we desired.”

Creation Wood synthetic floorcovering comprises a 0.7mm transparent wear layer for durability, a design film and a compact underlayer. Compressed and grained at high pressure for optimum strength, a protective polyurethane surface treatment facilitates cleaning and maintenance, eliminating the need for initial polishes. Offering an excellent walk surface and sound insulation, the product is available in 23 colourways. Possessing decorative, anti-static and abrasion-resistant qualities, it is suitable for virtually any interior floor application where good looks and functionality are required.

Without the luxury of the budgets that other larger corporations have at their disposal for the refurbishment of leisure facilities, cost efficiency was key and Kevin is delighted with the final result – a sharp leap from seven to 60 new members a day since the re-opening has reinforced his ambition for the club to offer the highest quality facilities in line with similar private sector developments. “We want to create our own brand through design and encourage people to enjoy the club,” continues Kevin. “With the quality, beauty and durability of Gerflor’s Creation Wood gracing our floors, we have achieved our aim and members are flocking to use the facilities that we offer.”
